I heard all the hype surrounding The Affair after winning the Golden Globe Award for best drama and best actress (Ruth Wilson) as well as a nomination for best actor (Dominic West), however I still did not take the bait. Now, after a random weekend marathon of binge watching months later, I see what everyone has been gushing about.
“The psychological effects of an affair between a married waitress at a Hamptons diner and a teacher who spends his summer at his in-laws’ estate on the island” – imdb.com
This brief synopsis is all you really know for sure is true when you begin watching this television series. This is the magic of the show and this is what will get you hooked right from episode one. The mysterious atmosphere of the world these characters inhabit, along with the dual point of views portrayed (each hour long episode is divided in two, one half is the story from her point of view and the other is from his) will keep you debating on who’s side to take.
Cleverly written and well acted from all involved – Ruth Wilson is captivating, with one raised eyebrow she can portray more emotional layers than a peeled onion and Dominic West has the ability to be a likable guy even though he’s a cheating husband – as a viewer your never really sure where the story is going, but that’s part of the fun watching the show and it makes this affair truly one to remember.
